Trouble operating Microscope.?

I obtained an old microscope from a garage sale. It's the kind that uses a mirror to direct light to the slide. I put hair and stuff on the slides but I can't see anything, even with every adjustment. However, when I look in the eye piece, I do see a magnified image of the eyelashes on my eye. Any idea whats going on?
