What's the meaning of Christmas?

I feel that at every Christmas gathering people always exclude the topic of Jesus and just center the entire occasion towards Santa Claus. However, I do understand this action because including him in the gathering would make some people of other beliefs rather uncomfortable, but then why even celebrate a holiday if you're not going to appreciate the meaning behind it and just continue to live for the party. What are your beliefs on this topic?
