If a state goes to one candidate, what about the votes from that state that went to the other candidate?

if obama won the state of Florida, he would get all the electoral votes. but what about all of the people that voted for john mccain in Florida, there vote basically didn't count. Why do we use the electoral college system, why not use popular vote to decide the presidency?
